Cleo Rose Elliott lived a charmed life. Growing up in the spotlight of Hollywood as the daughter of actors Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross.
Elliott could have easily followed in her famous parents' footsteps; she had the celebrity connections, good looks, and undeniable musical talent. However, at the age of 26, she stabbed her mother in the arm with scissors during a fit of rage.

Ross sought a restraining order against her daughter, and for a moment, it seemed that Elliott's actions would sever their close family ties. However, since that day, mother and daughter have attended numerous red carpet events together in Hollywood.
While Ross may have forgiven Elliott for the incident, the young model and singer's once-promising music career never fully recovered.
Cleo Rose Elliott's Early Life in Hollywood
Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross worked together in the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but they officially met in 1978 on the set of The Legacy.
Although Ross was Elliott's first wife, she had been married four times before. The couple married in May 1984, and four months later, on September 17, 1984, Cleo Rose Elliott was born in Malibu, California.
According to Malibu Times, Elliott decided to pursue a more musical path than her parents. She learned to play the flute and guitar as a child but always preferred singing.
After spending three years at Malibu High School, she graduated from Colin McEwan High School and then received four years of music training at the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Acting Studio in Santa Monica, California.
During her time at acting school, she found a brief job on a reality show called SexyHair and began modeling to pay the bills. Elliott later studied classical opera with famous singer-songwriter Charity Chapman.
In 2008, she released her debut album No More Lies, which was a semi-commercial hit. While her musical background was in Italian opera, Elliott's musical influences leaned more towards hard rock. She stated that she preferred the music of Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin over Verdi's repertoire.
“I only know how to write from my heart,” she told Malibu Times in 2008. “The songs on the No More Lies album are, of course, about love. Finding love and losing it. But it’s not about a specific person.” She also mentioned that she planned to take a break after the album to spend time with her pets before releasing more music.
Unfortunately, Cleo Rose Elliott's next headline news was not for a musical reason, but for a very different one.
Why Did Katharine Ross's Daughter Stab Her Six Times?
In 1992, a profile of Katharine Ross in PEOPLE magazine noted how much she enjoyed spending time with her husband and her then-seven-year-old daughter Cleo Rose Elliott. However, this changed as Elliott grew older.
Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross married in 1984, and four months later, Cleo Rose Elliott was born.
In a statement given to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Ross claimed, “Even when Cleo was a little girl, she verbally and emotionally harmed me, but it became increasingly violent when she was 12 or 13.”
According to a PEOPLE article from 2022, these violent tendencies peaked on March 2, 2011. That day, Elliott lost her temper. She told her mother, “I want to kill you,” and kicked the kitchen cabinet door.
She then began to circle around Ross. When Ross tried to call the police, Elliott cut the phone line with scissors and threatened to gouge her mother's eyes out.
Elliott then stabbed Ross six times in the arm with the scissors. When Ross sought a restraining order, she told the court that Elliott had “pierced my skin through my shirt, leaving scars that are still visible today.”
So, why did Katharine Ross's daughter stab her? The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear. To this day, no one can definitively say what triggered the outburst or confirm Ross's claims about Elliott's violent past or the destructive nature of her wounds.
Regardless, on March 8, 2011, Cleo Rose Elliott was ordered to stay 100 yards away from Ross and her home, car, and workplace. This meant Elliott had to move out of their Malibu home. It was also stated that when she needed to enter the property to retrieve her belongings, police had to accompany her.
However, both Elliott and Ross did not attend the scheduled hearing on March 30, 2011, and the restraining order was canceled. Shortly thereafter, Ross claimed that she and Cleo Rose Elliott were working to repair their relationship.
Maintaining a Low Profile After the Incident
More than a decade has passed since Elliott stabbed her mother, and there has been very little news about her in the press, as she has almost completely disappeared from public view. In fact, her Instagram page is private.
Wikimedia CommonsCleo Rose Elliott's father, Sam Elliott, is known for his roles in Western films and more recently in A Star Is Born and Yellowstone 1883.
However, in 2018, when her father was nominated for an Oscar for his role in A Star is Born, she appeared on the red carpet with her family.
Elliott's relationship with her mother seems to have significantly improved. The duo did an interview together for Indie Entertainment News Magazine in 2017, and Ross and her husband Sam Elliott starred together in the film The Hero.
At that time, Cleo Rose Elliott said, “They are both very talented, and that makes me proud of them.”
So, why did Katharine Ross's daughter stab her? We may never know the full truth, but the family seems closer than ever despite the scars left behind.
